Impacted Malaysia's
LGBTQ+ Community

The controversy surrounding Healy's kiss had a significant impact on the LGBTQ+ community in Malaysia, with added concerns about the potential damage to the reputation of the LGBTQ+ community. In the 2023 incident, Matty Healy, the lead vocalist of The 1975, sparked discussions by kissing his bandmate Ross MacDonald during their Malaysia concert. Healy's attitude and words on stage added fuel to the fire. The government cancelled the remaining days of the music festival immediately after the show. Therefore, Matty Healy and the incident became the main topic of public discussion.

This incident has undoubtedly prompted conversations about the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community within Malaysian society. Julia Tan Xi Ru,18, A-levels student, shared her reflections on the repercussions of the 1975 incident. She pointed out that Malaysia's conservative nature was already a challenge for the LGBTQ+ community, and the incident had reinforced negative stereotypes and conservative attitudes. In her opinion, the incident justified the existing negative perceptions and conservatism held against the LGBTQ+ community. "The majority of people here feel more entitled to shame this community more because they got their answer about their already negative connotations towards this minority," Julia said.
Tan Zhi Ling, 19, a Bachelor of Law student, believes there is difficulty in proving that Matty Healy's actions directly resulted in physical violence or assault on the LGBTQ+ community, but just because it did not cause physical harm does not mean the reputational harm is any less harmful. Zhi Ling cited a personal experience within the debate club, where new members referred to the LGBTQ+ community as "creatures'' during a debate. "Because of the Matty Healy situation, they now have more reason to try to justify these very bigoted or insensitive thoughts. If it is not the cause, it at least worsened it," Zhi Ling said.
Ian Lim Yien, 20, a Bachelor of Social Science in International Relations student, is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Reflecting on the Matty Healy incident, Ian offered a different perspective. "At first, it did cause an uproar. After a few months, I feel like the status quo remained." He observed that although the incident received much attention on social media, people's daily lives continued after the outrage subsided. "I feel like, in general, no one cares because people just mind their own business," he added. From a metropolitan perspective, Ian believes that many people can effectively separate the issue, recognising that the views of the local queer community differ significantly from those of Matty Healy. He also highlighted the danger of attributing the actions of one individual to an entire community, emphasising that such a perspective is stereotypic. "A person should get different perspectives of different media outlets on an incident because sometimes people just stick to one because it is easier to understand. Moreover, it gives a thing - Stereotyping," he said.

Maya Smeaton Tan Zhen Xin, 19, a Bachelor in Psychology student said Matty Healy disregarded the consequences of his actions and how it would affect those who face homophobia daily in Malaysia. Maya, who is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, pointed out the disparity in consequences, stating that Healy could leave the country without enduring the repercussions faced by the local LGBTQ+ community. She said, "This incident has not affected me personally apart from the show's cancellation. However, I feel like this incident has contributed to the worsening of the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community within Malaysia." She continued by saying that it has given people with prejudiced opinions power and given them the right to voice their homophobic feelings publicly. In response to a question concerning the incident's overall harm, Maya emphasised that the LGBTQ+ community already has a bad reputation in Malaysia.

Furthermore, she pointed out the resulting panic among event organisers and authorities, which led to more significant procedures, attributing this to the apprehension of LGBTQ+ individuals. She added that she did not think the media exaggerated the incident. She did, however, emphasised the necessity of responsible and unbiased media coverage of such situations in order to prevent the reinforcement of prejudiced and homophobic viewpoints.
This variety of viewpoints draws attention to how complicated the incident's effects are in terms of how Malaysian society views the LGBTQ+ community. While some noted that the incident only had a short-term negative influence on society's beliefs, others pointed out that it solidified negative perceptions. The numerous perspectives encourage a deeper awareness of the incident's influence on societal perceptions of the LGBTQ+ community. They also highlight the importance of taking into account a variety of perspectives and sources in order to prevent oversimplified narratives and stereotypes. Ultimately, this wide range of perspectives highlights the necessity to thoroughly analyse societal reactions to these kinds of incidents to fully comprehend their implications.
